Personal Story

Jacqueline Maldonado emigrated from Uganda, East Africa to Cambridge, Massachusetts. Growing up in a family that knew the value of industry and perseverance, she watched as her mother eventually earned a doctorate in education. While both parents worked hard in pursuit of a better life for their family, Jacqueline and her seven siblings raised each other.

Her pursuit of an architectural degree started early. “My sister Julia led me to my career indirectly. Her version of baby-sitting me and the only way she could get me to sit down quietly for long periods of time was by tearing out interesting magazine ads, cutting them in half, and making me draw the other side.” Jacqueline had talent and Julia, seeing this, entered some of her younger sister’s drawings into competitions. Jacqueline won her first city-wide competition at 8-years old.

Recognition like this eventually led to her to getting accepted to St. Paul’s School, in Concord, New Hampshire. There she excelled at Visual Design. “In the mornings we had to go to the beautiful campus chapel and those moments changed my life. I was in absolute awe of its structural integrity and architectural beauty.”

Jacqueline describes her life experience as interesting yet unconventional from her years in Uganda to her East Coast prep-school education, a stint in France as a chef at an ashram and her current life and architectural work in San Diego. “Through the years, God has been my True North,” she said, “and my Sivananda Yoga practice has taught me how to give my actions to my higher power without being attached to the results.”

Even with her many accomplishments, she still is quick to profess “I am most proud of making two of the most special humans on this earth — my son and daughter.” In her free time, Jacqueline enjoys snowboarding with her son, who is now in college, and roller skating with friends.
