Pacific Rim Elementary School, part of Carlsbad Unified School District, is a high-performing, well-regarded K-5 school serving a diverse and engaged community of students, families, and educators. Known for its strong academic programs, dedicated staff, and commitment to student success, the school fosters a collaborative and innovative learning environment, supporting student success at every level.

To further enhance educational opportunities, StudioWC has been selected to collaborate with the district on a comprehensive campus renovation. Our design prioritizes innovative, sustainable learning environments that meet the evolving needs of students and staff while aligning with the district’s goals and vision.

The project includes the removal of eleven outdated portable classroom buildings, making way for two new permanent structures designed to enrich both academic and extracurricular programs. A new 12,200-square-foot classroom building will be thoughtfully situated around the existing STEAM building, creating a cohesive learning environment that encourages interdisciplinary connections. This new facility will feature modern, flexible learning spaces with direct connections to the outdoors, fostering collaboration and student engagement. Additionally, an adjacent outdoor learning space will provide opportunities for hands-on exploration, small group instruction, and collaborative activities in an open-air setting.

A second, 3,300-square-foot building will be dedicated to the school’s music and after-school care programs. To streamline parent access and enhance campus security, this building will feature a dedicated entry from the adjacent parking lot for parent pick-up and drop-off. This design limits parent access to the main campus, reducing congestion and ensuring a safer, more controlled environment for students. The space will provide a dynamic environment tailored for creative expression and extended learning opportunities.

Outdoor enhancements will further improve the campus experience, featuring a shade structure with solar panels and battery storage, reconfigured hardcourts for better functionality and supervision, and dedicated outdoor learning spaces that support diverse educational activities and collaboration.

Additional upgrades include drought-tolerant landscaping, new perimeter site walls and fencing, and comprehensive fire alarm and security enhancements to ensure a safe and engaging environment.

Through this collaboration, we aim to transform Pacific Rim Elementary into a modern, inspiring space that reflects the district’s commitment to educational excellence—one that fosters creativity, collaboration, and student-centered learning while providing a safe, sustainable, and engaging environment for generations to come.
