Lakeside Middle School

Project Scope

MPR Modernization and Classroom Addition
Irvine, CA
Irvine Unified School District

Originally constructed in the late 1970s, Lakeside Middle School is undergoing a comprehensive transformation that enhances core learning environments, modernizes key campus facilities, and strengthens safety, visibility, and user experience. StudioWC’s design approach respects the existing architectural character while introducing modern materials—metal paneling, operable glass NanaWalls, and metal-clad overhangs—to create a cohesive, contemporary identity.

At the heart of the project is a major modernization of the existing multipurpose building. The design raises the previously sunken floor, introduces a new raised stage and proscenium, and upgrades finishes, lighting, acoustics, and accessibility. A 3,355-SF addition expands the 5,117-SF MPR to include a new public-facing entry lobby, accessible restrooms, and a dedicated music classroom with integrated instrument storage, giving the school a flexible, high-performing venue for daily use and special events.

Campus functionality is further improved through a reconfiguration and expansion of the food service building. Updates include new equipment—such as a walk-in refrigerator and freezer—along with improved circulation paths and serving efficiency to better support daily student flow.

A major renovation of the administration building relocates and expands the reception area, shifting it from its previous hidden location to a visible and intuitive point of arrival. The reimagined admin suite adds office space, a larger nurse’s suite, a conference room, and a relocated staff lounge. Together, these improvements create a true single point of entry, enhance security, and provide clearer sightlines, stronger supervision, and better operational flow.

Site enhancements complete the modernization effort, including new outdoor courtyards and student gathering zones connected with operable glass walls, concrete seat walls, artificial turf, and drought-tolerant landscaping. These flexible indoor-outdoor environments become active extensions of learning, collaboration, and community life on campus.
